In the marine industry, repairs can cost companies time and loss of earnings, and this is without considering the cost of the repairs themselves. It can end up being extremely costly.

Over the last ten years we’ve been constantly adapting and improving our onsite machining capabilities. The advantages of this approach were highlighted by a recent job we did for ‘Northern Marine Management’.

We were contacted to help with an urgent repair on a large vessel called the ‘Stena Seatrader’. At the time, the vessel was in a dry dock at Holland’s Scheldepoort Yard.  We appreciated in advance the extent of the machining repairs required, so when we arrived on-site we had all the necessary equipment needed to begin and complete the machining task.

The machining repair itself was to the entablature water jacket landings on an auxillary engine. In most circumstances this process would have required the cylinder studs, fuel blocks or exhaust manifold to be removed before the engine could be repaired. Luckily, the skills of our team and the nature of our onsite machining equipment meant that we were able to make the necessary repairs without removing any of these core components. The result was less downtime, less expense and a much faster turnaround.

This particular job really highlights the advantages of onsite machining over traditional workshop machining in certain situations. This way of working allowed us to deliver a fast, convenient solution that ended up being extremely cost effective for our customer.

On site machining process are particularly useful in the marine, petrochemical and renewable energy industry. If you are interested to know more about our on-site capabilities, or if you’ve got a particular job that you’d like to discuss with us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
